One of the most senior member of our lab, senior researcher Tiit Pärnik (born in 1938) has retired. He has been working in the same Plant Physiology department since graduating from the University of Tartu in 1962. During these 53 years, the department has changed its location and affiliation for several times. But Tiit has not been bothered much by administrative trifle and has continued with his work on plant photosynthetic and metabolic mechanisms. The main focus of his research has been related to working out novel technologies for quantification of carbon fluxes in photosynthesizing leaves using radioactive isotope of carbon 14C. Tiit has built, mostly together with another senior member of our lab, Olav Keerberg, some rather unique machines that still serve our lab and also colleagues from other work groups. He has developed an original radiogasometric method for determination of the rates of photorespiratory and respiratory decarboxylations of primary and stored photosynthates under steady-state photosynthesis. In 1973 he defended the thesis of candidate of sciences (plant physiology, equivalent to PhD). In 1989 he took part in an international marine expedition on Indian Ocean where he studied photosynthesis and respiration of seagrasses. In 1994 to 1996 he worked in the University of Umea (Sweden) studying the problems of cold hardening of cereals and intracellular compartmentation of photosynthetic reactions in protoplasts of barley. Tiit is the author of 186 scientific publications.
